Giro d’Italia: Chris Froome crashes in warm-up, then loses 37 seconds to Tom Dumoulin on stage-one time-trial

Chris Froome recovered from a pre-race crash with a muted performance in the Giro d’Italia’s opening stage, a 9.7km individual time-trial, in which he lost 37 seconds to the defending champion and stage winner, Tom Dumoulin. Froome’s blighted Giro d’Italia bid could hardly have got off to a worse start. The four-times Tour de France winner crashed in training during a reconnaissance ride of the Jerusalem street circuit. The British rider landed heavily on his right side and hobbled before remounting and finishing his morning training lap. He rode the afternoon time-trial sporting bandages on his knee, hip, midriff and shoulder.
