Gippy GrewalThe eighth edition of the Fast & Furious franchise conquered India last weekend while Manje Bistre, a Punjabi romantic drama starring Gippy Grewal had stellar launches in India, the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. Meanwhile Tamil moviegoers were spoilt for choice, offered a trio of films headlining Lawrence Raghava, Arya and Rajkiran during Tamil New Year. The only new Hindi release, Begum Jaan, a drama starring Vidya Balan set primarily during the 1947 India/Pakistan partition,did not generate big numbers but has already recouped half its modest budget. Director F. Gary Gray’s Fast & Furious 8 grossed an estimated $10.4 million including previews at 1,260 locations, Universal’s second biggest opening weekend of all time behind Fast & Furious 7, which opened on 1,959 locations. Gippy Grewal wrote, produced and stars in Manje Bistre with an ensemble cast including Sonam Bajwa, Dilpreet Dhillon, Jaggi Singh, Harby Sangha, Sardar Sohi, BN Sharma, Anita Devgan, Hobby Dhaliwal and Gurpreet Ghuggi.
