Miss Bala is an almost comic example of what can happen when a grim foreign flick gets a Hollywood remake. That this Sony release is so different from the original isn't necessarily an issue since the original is available to rent at the click of a button for a few bucks. For those unaware, Miss Bala follows a Mexican-American make-up artist (Gina Rodriguez) who shows up in Mexico to visit a friend (Cristina Rodlo) who is competing in a local beauty pageant. Lifetime melodramas have their place (it would have been nice if you watched You before it went to Netflix), and Miss Bala works in that sandbox. For those who merely want to watch a grindhouse thriller featuring Gina Rodriguez in a leading role, Miss Bala gets the job done.
