Gibraltar to ban conversion therapyThe Equality Rights Group has welcomed the government’s decision to legislate against the practiceThe Minister for Justice and Equality has confirmed that the government is currently working on legislation to ban the practice of conversion therapy in Gibraltar, a method that has been described as “unethical and potentially harmful” by the NHS in England. The Minister for Justice and Equality, the Hon Samantha Sacramento, said: "I am proud that this Government is already working to introduce legislation to prohibit the practice of conversion therapy, which has no place in Gibraltar. The Equality Rights Group, and the public, can be reassured that work is underway to draft a Bill, with the aim to publish before the summer." Conversion therapy is the practice of methods like counselling and aversive stimulation to suppress a person’s sexual orientation, and is also used to alter the gender identity of trans people. The Equality Rights Group (ERG) said it first raised this issue with Gibraltar almost a year ago and has welcomed the government’s decision to legislate a ban on the practice.
