Giant rooster in Jenjarom

The structure, the highlight of the Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple’s annual lantern show held to welcome the new lunar year, features an animated rooster lantern that stands 30 metres above the ground. Thanks to animatronics, this rooster, representing the 10th animal on the Chinese zodiac, does not only stand up but crows as well. On the west end of the temple, slightly smaller in stature than the giant rooster but certainly no less colourful are two phoenixes and a family of chickens. “We have over 1,000 volunteers helping at each festival and these craftsmen have been making these giant lanterns since 2004, which incidentally was also to greet the Year of the Rooster,” she says. The scroll painting, known as Prosperous Suzhou, was created by artist Chen Chun Sheng from Jiangsu, China, two decades ago.
