FC Astana won the Kazakh Premier League title on Sunday after the title race went down to the final day. The Kazakh league system is played on a calendar-year basis because of the harsh winters in the Central Asian nation. Astana was only founded in 2009 but has grown rapidly with backing from the Kazakh government's sovereign wealth fund. It became the first Kazakh club to reach the Champions League group stage in 2015-16 and is in the group stage of the Europa League this season.
