Getting rural women behind the wheelErin Tasker/Stuff Wendy Hewitt is the rural driver licensing co-ordinator for Safer Ashburton. A new pilot programme aiming at getting rural women behind the wheel to prevent social isolation is about to begin in Mid Canterbury. The driver licensing programme is aimed at migrants and newcomers to the district and rural driving licensing co-ordinator Wendy Hewitt said it's about giving them independence and a life outside of their own four walls. Funded by the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, the programme will start over the next couple of weeks with an initial intake of 12 women. Anyone interested in being a part of the programme can contact Wendy Hewitt at Safer Ashburton.
