Get a call from Africa last night? Do NOT call back. Here’s why

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Lots of Central New York residents are reporting receiving multiple robocalls to their cell phones seemingly from North Africa late Monday night and early Tuesday. The calls appeared to come from Mauritania, a poor country in Northwest Africa and lasted just one ring -- the hallmarks of a type of phone scam that’s been around for years. In other words, it was Central New York’s turn, as the robocallers began dialing numbers in the 315 area code. If you do not otherwise make international calls, ask your local or wireless phone company to block outgoing international calls on your line. In addition, Wiquist said it’s wise not to return calls, even seemingly from local numbers, that you do not recognize.
