That was the unequivocal message Gerry Adams delivered to more than 2,500 delegates in the Royal Dublin Society on Saturday night. Ahead of his announcement Sinn Féin officials promised his statement would be “definitive and historic”. There are many, some of them victims of IRA violence, who hold an equally strong and opposite view of Gerry Adams. He still carries a national and international cachet and Sinn Féin won’t want to lose that benefit.
