Germany’s foreign population growth slows to ten year low

Some 740,000 non-Germans moved to the country last year, while 479,000 left. Excluding British citizens, around 107,000 or 2.2 per cent more foreigners from EU states lived in Germany than in 2019, a growth rate on a par with 2019. Net immigration from India was worst hit, falling from a plus of 21,000 people in 2019 to just 8,000 last year. Also notable was that, for the first time, the number of Chinese and US citizens who left Germany exceed the number who arrived – in both cases, around 3,000 more people left the country than moved here.
