A German woman has gone on trial on charges that, as a member of the extremist Islamic State group in Iraq, she allowed a 5-year- old Yazidi girl she and her husband kept as a slave to die of thirst in the hot sun. The girl's mother is to be called as a witness, and is also a co-plaintiff in the case as allowed under German law. Prosecutors allege she then made her way to Iraq through Turkey and Syria in 2014 to join the Islamic State. It was in the summer of that year that she and her husband, an Islamic State fighter, purchased the young Yazidi girl as a slave.
