German ambassador calls for safeguarding Egyptian rights to Nile water, says Egypt integral to stability in region

CAIRO – 28 March 2021: The international community and the European Union call for negotiations for the purpose of safeguarding Egyptian rights in the matter of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), German ambassador to Cairo Cyrill Nunn said Sunday. Nunn said the GERD issue should be resolved in political ways, emphasizing that Egypt lives by the waters of the Nile River and thus these rights and needs must be secured. In a press conference, the ambassador also highlighted Egypt’s integral role in resolving any issue in the Middle East. Nunn referred to the Munich Group, which includes Germany, France, Jordan, and Egypt, saying it continuously seeks resolutions in the Middle East. He said that in the group, relations with Egypt are “positive and dynamic,” and that nothing is decided without getting back to Cairo.
