Major League Baseball couldn’t beat George Steinbrenner when he was alive but is trying its hardest to beat him in death by keeping him out of Cooperstown. None of the 16-member committee, even the Hall of Famers, I would surmise contributed as much to baseball or made a greater impact in the game than Steinbrenner. Forbes valued the Yankees at $4 billion this summer and reported Major League Baseball surpassed $10 billion in total annual revenue. Steinbrenner was relentless and bombastic and undoubtedly rubbed opposing players and executives the wrong way. It also casts a shadow over in penchant for firing general managers and managers with regularity, including Billy Martin five times.
