A-list film star George Clooney is making his return to television armed with a classic novel, Catch-22. On Thursday, Paramount Television confirmed Clooney, who left NBC’s ER in 1999 to pursue a successful film career, will direct and star in a six-episode limited-series adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Second World War novel. Alan Arkin played the lead character, Captain Yossarian, in Mike Nichols’ well-regarded 1970 film of the same name. In the adaptation, Clooney will portray Colonel Cathcart, who was played by Martin Balsam in the earlier film. Clooney and Grant Heslov, who serve as executive producers, will direct the limited series, which is being produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.
