FATE OF THE ELEPHANTThere are two types of elephants — the smaller Asian elephant and the more massive African elephant. The less fortunate African elephants have seen a 95 per cent plummet in their population number over the last century. Over two thirds of the ivory seized was from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the three major exit points for the world’s illegal elephant ivory trade. HOPE FLOATSBut all’s not grim in the war on illegal ivory trade. Africa also launched the Elephant Protection Initiative, and recognises the African Elephant Action Plan (Africa’s elephant conservation blueprint), endorsed by all 38 elephant range states.
