Two of the most important sports in my life are rugby and golf and in the late Bill McLaren and now the late Peter Alliss, both sports were blessed to have peerless commentators. Just as important they were both humble, caring men who listened as much as they talked and whose love for their sports shone through above all else. I would have been happy waiting for a delayed bus with either of them. Down the years I interviewed Alliss more than once at his large, commodious home in Hindhead, Surrey, where there was a sign at the end of the drive saying “tradesmen’s entrance”. It was a joke, for he was not in the least a snob.
