The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved, on May 1, an experimental use permit which allows Oxitec to release genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys and Harris County, Texas, reports USA Today. However, there is opposition to these genetically modified mosquitoes. Before weekly mosquito releases can start, however, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District have to approve. The federal government has truly given permission to Oxitec to release genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida and Texas, but the permits still need local approval.
