General Motors to Lay Off up to 600 Workers at Ontario Plant

Photo: Getty ImagesTORONTO— General Motors Co. plans to lay off up to 600 workers at a southwestern Ontario plant as production for its older Chevrolet Equinox sport-utility vehicle winds down and production of a new SUV model is being moved in Mexico. A smaller, new generation of the Equinox will continue to be built at the plant, which currently employs about 3,200 workers. The plant also builds the GMC Terrain SUV, but production of a redesigned version of the vehicle will be built at a GM plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, GM CEO Mary Barra said earlier this month. The layoffs come as GM plans thousands of layoffs in the U.S. related to a downturn in demand for small cars. GM is among the Detroit auto companies under pressure from the Trump administration to reverse course on Mexico production.
