Students march to the constituency office of their local MP Gavin Williamson, the education secretary, this morning. They will now benefit from the U-turnGavin Williamson has announced that all A-level and GCSE results will be based on teachers’ predictions as he apologised to students, parents and schools. The education secretary said he was “sorry for the distress this has caused” after a dramatic retreat by the government over the system for awarding grades. Nearly 40 per cent of pupils had their predicted results downgraded by an algorithm, prompting a revolt from Tory MPs. The announcement came less than 72 hours after Mr Williamson told The Times that there would be “no U-turn, no change” and warned of the risk of “rampant grade inflation”.
