Gas Malaysia to benefit from protracted Middle East turmoil, says UOB Kay Hian

KUALA LUMPUR (March 11): The ongoing Middle East turmoil may lead to prolonged higher natural gas prices that directly translate into better earnings for Gas Malaysia Bhd (KL:GASMSIA), said UOB Kay Hian. Gas Malaysia derives about 40% of its net profit from the sale of natural gas to more than 1,000 industrial customers, according to the research house’s estimates. Every 1% change in natural gas prices can swing Gas Malaysia’s net profit by 4%, the house’s analysis showed. If the conflict leads to elevated oil prices beyond six months, “Gas Malaysia stands to benefit as higher natural gas prices translate to growing profitability", UOB Kay Hian said in a note. Natural gas sold domestically, meanwhile, is set based on the Malaysia Reference Price that benchmarks against the value of exports.
