A community from Garissa has filed a case challenging plans by the government to expand the Hirola Sanctuary. They argue that Farida, the county government and KWS have conspired and co-operated to deprive them and the residents of Ijara subcounty their rights over community land by secretly annexing the land. They want the court to issue an order stopping the government from interfering with their community land and any annexation to expand the Hirola Conservancy. “Unless orders are issued against the government and agencies, we will be completely deprived of our community land,” they say. They accused Northern Rangeland Trust of handpicking officials of Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy to hoodwink them and to dominate and conquer their land.
