The shipment was labelled as recyclable material — but it was contaminated by household garbage, including dirty diapers. The Philippines has been asking Canada to take its garbage back since 2014. Earlier this spring, President Rodrigo Duterte threatened war over the issue, and the Philippines pulled its ambassador and consular officials from Canada. The garbage was originally shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014 by a private Canadian company called Chronic Inc. But the 103 shipping containers of waste were improperly labelled as recycling; while the garbage from 34 of the containers was disposed of in a Philippines landfill, 69 containers sat at a port in Manila for years.
