Ashhurst chief fire officer Nathan Loach said the fire was in the garage well involved when firefighters arrived. No-one was injured, but the family's car was inside the garage and was also badly damaged by the blaze. Loach said the garage was detached from the house, and the fire did not spread, so the house and surrounding properties were undamaged. The property is on the town's main thoroughfare, so traffic through Ashhurst was controlled as the two fire crews worked on the fire.
