Gandhi’s India comes alive, with paper


The papier mache work was done by sculptor Vanapalli Narasinga Rao of Visakhapatnam. Eco-friendly“One can depict emotions perfectly on papier mache unlike in other media,” says Narasinga Rao. He makes his papier mache works by sticking paper layer by layer instead of the usual practice of grounding the paper waste into pulp and making models. He goes on sticking paper, layer by layer, till the desired thickness and strength is achieved. “I was drawn to the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi after reading his autobiography in 2002.
