Spoiler alert: this article refers to events in the Game of Thrones series finale, shown earlier on Sky Atlantic at 2am and repeated tonight at 9pmGame of ThronesSky Atlantic★★★★☆For the first six seasons Game of Thrones was like a complicated, sexy and violent game of chess played out on a giant chessboard with intricately carved pieces. For much of season seven the showrunners, David Benioff and DB Weiss, untethered from the books of George RR Martin on which it was based (he couldn’t write them fast enough), had taken Gendry’s hammer to the chessboard and smashed it all to pieces as rushed, preposterous plotting, showy set pieces and exercises in fan wish fulfilment turned an exceptional series into a sensationalist Hollywood blockbuster.
