“Our inexperience showed when, in the first season, our shows came in really short,” explained David Benioff, one of the co-creators of Game of Thrones, to Deadline many years ago. It wasn’t fire-breathing dragons and swashbuckling knights that made audiences love Game of Thrones, not really. It’s a welcome reminder of why we tune in to Game of Thrones. But also warmth and wit, of the kind you can squeeze out when you’re budget’s tapped dry. Game of Thrones, perhaps covertly, is one of the great hang-out shows.
