There are tender scenes showing Monroe and DiMaggio cuddling by a hotel window with a stunning mountain view. The results, the publisher added, were shots of Monroe “rarely seen in the thousands of carefully styled photographs issued by her studio and handlers. In 2008, prompted by Monroe’s 1953 stay in the Rockies, Calgary’s Glenbow Museum mounted an exhibition celebrating the pop-culture icon. And Monroe’s summer in Alberta was still inspiring artists long after Mr. Vachon snapped his pictures nearly 60 years ago. “Unlike my hero, I never slept with Marilyn Monroe.”
