Astronomers previously thought that the mighty Andromeda Galaxy, a spiral galaxy 2.5 million light years distant, and the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way, would collide with the Milky Way in eight billion years. They both orbit the Milky Way, but have only done so for around 1.5 billion years. This new research suggests that it could instead sink towards the Milky Way. Awakening of a black hole ... and 'cosmic fireworks'The impact could send our solar system hurtling into space. It could also wake up the Milky Way's dormant black hole, known as Sagittarius A*, which would begin devouring surrounding gas and get ten times bigger.
