Gaeltacht community launches appeal to fight Gougane wind farm development

The proposal would see seven 178.5m wind turbines erected on the slopes overlooking Gougane Barra, one of the most visited tourist spots in Ireland. A Gaeltacht community is set to challenge the permission granted to build a wind farm overlooking one of the most scenic areas of Cork, Gougane Barra near Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh. In its refusal, Cork County Council said that the development would materially contravene the objectives of the Cork County Development Plan and “would beexcessively domineering from very many vantage points over a wide area”. Councillors at the February 14 meeting of Cork County Council unanimously declared their opposition to the planned wind farm. "This is far more than a local issue now,” said campaign spokesman Neil Lucey, the owner of Gougane Barra Hotel.
