MPs impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday night after a lengthy and raucous debate. The day before, Gachagua took the unusual step of defending himself in a two-hour TV press conference in which he dismissed the 11 charges as a witch-hunt engineered by his political enemies. As the law provides, the trial now heads to the Senate where, again, the case will be prosecuted and, again, Gachagua will be handed a chance to defend himself. Reports in the media also indicate that Gachagua will likely dash to court to challenge the impeachment decision. Instead of a self-serving, long fight in the courts, Gachagua should resign and save his career, which will almost certainly be blighted by an impeachment at the Senate.
