By Vince D’Writer, Special to the SunThe African-American relationship with law enforcement has been shaky since the late 1940s, when blacks were increasingly being employed as police officers. The catch was that in many cases, black officers were not permitted to drive squad cars, patrol white neighbourhoods, or arrest white people. In the 1950s, Americans first began to witness, through the media, acts of police misconduct and police brutality towards blacks. Peaceful protestors seeking basic civil rights were attacked using police dogs, fire hoses and baton shots to the head. The history of the relationship between African-Americans and police is an ongoing problem, year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation.
