GE wins deal to build turnkey substation for first desalination plant using clean energy in Saudi

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia : GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions has won a deal from Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd., to build a turnkey substation that will power the Yanbu-4 independent water producer (IWP) plant. A consortium of GE’s Grid Solutions and Al Sharif Group will provide the full turnkey solution for Yanbu-4 including a 380-110 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation. The substation will provide Yanbu-4 the power required by each load center at the plant. Reverse osmosis is the primary desalination process whereby water is pushed under high pressure through fine membranes to produce potable water. The process of desalination is power-intensive, and GE’s Grid Solutions supports plants through its technology solutions.
