GDP growth in Q2: For team Narendra Modi, a (temporary) sigh of relief after 5 agonising quarters


GDP growth has stopped sliding after five agonising quarters: The Q2 July-September growth figure released on Thursday stands at 6.3 per cent. It's way lower than the 7.5 per cent growth recorded in last year's second quarter. In fact, after releasing the latest figures, Chief Statistician TCA Anant said the reversal of a five-quarter slide in GDP growth had been driven by a "pick-up" in manufacturing. The Q2 GDP data is the first that was evaluated after GST was implemented. Since several state and central taxes were subsumed in GST, tax collection data between April-June and July-September can't be compared: The two tax regimes were different.
