WorldHANGZHOU, AFP -Leaders of the G20, the world's biggest developed and emerging economies, have agreed to oppose protectionism, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday. “We have agreed... to support the multilateral trade system and oppose protectionism,” Xi said after hosting the G20 summit in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. There were fears the gathering would be short on substance, with no acute crisis pushing leaders to defy rising populist sentiment. Xi did not identify any specific measures that the G20 would take to liberalise commerce. Xi said that relying only on fiscal and monetary policy for growth would not work.
