Mangaweka’s iconic roadside plane being dismantled for transport to Shannon for restoration and maintenance. The future of one of New Zealand’s most iconic roadside attractions is up in the air, as Mangaweka’s DC-3 undergoes extensive maintenance. The plane’s owner Brendan “Mintie” Cottle​ said the iconic plane was in desperate need of repairs after 35 years exposed to the elements. The plane was originally brought to town by Viv and John Eames​, as an advertisement for their business, Rangitīkei River Adventures.
