Forest fungi - more than 200 fruiting bodies on a single branch but fungi are so plentiful most NZ species don't have a common name. Towards autumn in many fungi species the hyphae cluster together and form a mat which is known as mycelium. It was taken in a dark location in a thick forest where there was an abundance of damp, decaying timber. Some months before the photograph some fungi spore would have drifted in the air and landed on fallen branch. The almost black branch can't be seen against the dark background but the fungi growing on it are quite spectacular.
