The spores are inhaled and cause infection in the lungs, with Aspergillus or Mucor if the patient has immune deficiencies. Fungi of this group can cause infection if inhaled in the presence of damaged cells, in the passages of the nose and can settle there to cause infections. This has nothing to do with the “colour” of the fungus but is a tissue reaction. Further tests are performed to identify the drugs that should be used for the treatment of these infections. Some fungi even produce diffusible pigments of a bright red colour!There are thousands of such opportunistic fungi that cause infections when the “soil is right”.
