The federal government announced a new $20-million Whalesafe Gear Adoption Fund earlier this month. The financial assistance will "absolutely" encourage more fishermen to try the new gear, said Lillian Mitchell, executive director of the Fundy North Fishermen's Association, based in St. Andrews. The new program is available to individual fishers, non-profit organizations and academics wanting to "test and refine" whalesafe gear, as well as the companies that are making it.
