Out of the anger of the crisis emerged a new generation of housing activism, with the Dublin Housing Action Committee (DHAC) in particular demanding the demolition of unfit tenement housing and the provision of more working-class housing. There was some tension between these ideas, and one commentator noted: “We have been recently and dramatically reminded that old buildings can kill. Unfortunately, the most radical and ambitious proposal in working-class housing in the 1960s would also prove to be the greatest failure.
