Fugitive Mubarak-era minister arrested after 7-month escape


There have been a lot of news over the past few days about the escape of Habib al-Adly, the former interior minister during Hosni Mubarak era, from Egypt. (AFP)CAIRO – 5 December 2017: Police forces arrested former Interior Minister, Habib al-Adly, on Tuesday, after being at large for the past few months; he is expected to serve a prison term on charges of embezzlement.On April 15, a Cairo court sentenced Adly to seven years in prison over charges of embezzling public funds belonging to the Ministry of the Interior.Following the ruling, the whereabouts of Adly was unknown, and he was considered to be a fugitive after fleeing house arrest to avoid serving the jail sentence.Adly is expected to attend a session before the Court of Cassation, the highest court in Egypt, on January 11 to appeal the sentence. Adly must show up at court so his appeal can be considered.In 2014, he was acquitted, along with six of his aides, on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the January 25 Revolution of 2011.
