Leading British historians are calling for the return of a huge hoard of UK art treasures that has gone missing in the United States. The former V&A director, Sir Roy Strong, is one of the academics calling for Britain’s vanished heritage to be found. Efforts to find the room, one of two from the castle sold to Hearst, have so far failed. “Around 20 houses on Park Avenue alone had old English rooms. “The whereabouts of a lot of the items Hearst bought are not known,” says Dr Catherine Larkin of the William Randolph Hearst Archive at Long Island University, New York.
