Randol Contreras, a U of T sociologist and leading researcher on gangs, published a book on drug dealers in the Bronx hood where he grew up. His acclaimed book, The Stickup Kids: Race, Drugs, Violence, and the American Dream, follows the violent path of several South Bronx drug dealers — most of them his childhood friends. With the help of an experienced drug dealer, a close friend Contreras calls Pablo, they cooked it into a pile of crack. Reached by phone in the Bronx, Pablo said Contreras wasn’t cut out for the job. Gus grew up in a home where his older brother and stepfather were drug dealers.
