STX Entertainment and Lakeshore Entertainment debuted Adrift into 3,015 theaters yesterday. The $35m production was partially covered by around $20m in foreign pre-sales and otherwise co-financed by STX, Lakeshore, Huayi Brothers and Ingenious. BH Tilt debuted the surprisingly well-reviewed (and mostly enjoyable) Upgrade into 1,457 theaters yesterday in another one of their demographically-targeted semi-wide theatrical releases. Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s winning streak sadly ended at two, as the Johnny Knoxville comedy Action Point was essentially dumped into 2,032 theaters yesterday. Nonetheless, the horrific $775,000 Friday and likely $2.3 million weekend is a whiff.
