Fresh hope as orca pod spotted off Kāpiti Coast

Toa the orca, stranded on the rocks on Sunday near Plimmerton, on Wednesday romped around his pen with its carers. An air and sea search is underway after an orca pod was spotted off the Kāpiti Coast, near the site an orca calf has been cared for over three cold nights. The four-to-six-month-old orca, named Toa, was found on the beach at Plimmerton, north of Wellington on Sunday. Experts said it was too young to care for itself and its best hope remained in reuniting it with its pod, or finding another pod to take it on. Department of Conservation marine species manager Ian Angus said there had been two reported sightings of a pod off the Kāptiti coast, one near Kāpiti Island, on Wednesday morning.
