French tourists turn the table on Kaikōura fishing fine scammer


Three French tourists never expected to be scammed in New Zealand, but nearly lost thousands when a man pretended to be a fishery officer. Laure​ Guillou​, her sister and her sister's boyfriend went snorkelling near Kaikōura on holiday in November and caught three fish. Kaikōura man Daniel James pretended to be a Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) official and demanded they pay him money for the fish, which he said were undersized. A resident who lived near the camping site where where trio were staying put them in touch with a real MPI fishery officer.
