Berkeley has come to be seen as a battleground in national debates over interpretations of the First Amendment, and this month, Free Speech Week was the latest major point of contention. A spokesman for the Berkeley Patriot did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He added that event organizers had missed deadlines, failed to confirm speakers and canceled a venue reservation. Mr. Yiannopoulos acknowledged on Saturday that “there were some hiccups with the speakers, for which I take personal responsibility.”Another planned speech by Mr. Yiannopoulos was canceled in February after a violent demonstration. And in April, the university canceled a speech by Ms. Coulter, citing security concerns.
