Democratic businessman and philanthropist Fred Hubbell cruised to victory in what had been a closely fought primary for governor. With just 14 percent of precincts reporting, the Associated Press called the race for Hubbell, who was winning more than 55 percent of votes in a six-way race. Hubbell will face Republican Kim Reynolds, who became governor after her predecessor left to become ambassador to China; she faced no primary after successfully challenging an opponent’s ballot petition signatures. But Hubbell spent heavily to win the race and caught a lucky break in its final weeks. He quit the race, and none of Hubbell’s less well-funded challengers were able to capture his votes.
