MANILA, Philippines – Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna downed Woman FIDE Master Baiq Vina Lestari in the 11th and final round to finish second behind eventual champion WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili in the JAPFA International Closed WGM tournament in Indonesia Tuesday night. The former Far Eastern U standout and UAAP co-athlete of the year, however, earned 15.8 FIDE rating points and confidence she will use when she embarks on a European tour for the second straight year starting next month. Meanwhile, Filipinos IMs Haridas Pascua and Oliver Dimakiling finished second and third behind eventual winner IM Vega Marcos Llaneza of Spain in the just concluded 45th Selangor Open Chess Tournament in Malaysia. Llaneza, Pascua and Dimakiling actually finished tied for first after beating Filipino Efren Bagamasbad, Malaysian Chan Kim Yew and another Philippine bet Merben Roque, respectively, with seven points apiece after nine rounds. Llaneza, however, clinched the crown after emerging with the highest tiebreak score of 53 against Pascua’s 52 and Dimakiling’s 51.
