If Frank Ocean taught you anything about patience over the past four years, now is a nifty time to apply those lessons to your listening. [Frank Ocean released a new album. Across both, Ocean seems strangely disinterested in new textures, new melodies, even the idea of momentum itself. With “Channel Orange,” Ocean was working toward Joni Mitchell levels of imagery and storytelling, but these albums feel more like a treasure hunt. That seems to be the lesson that Ocean is ultimately preaching on these albums, calm and cool.
