France recalled its ambassador to Rome on Thursday, for the first time since Italy declared war on France in 1940. Mr Di Stefano is part of the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) whose leader, Luigi Di Maio, is a deputy prime minister and minister for labour. Mr Di Maio posted a photograph of himself with gilets jaunes leaders on Instagram, with the caption, “The winds of change have crossed the Alps. Mr Salvini and Mr Di Maio both seek potential allies in the EU parliament. Alluding to Mr Di Maio’s trip to Montargis, it added: “The most recent interference constitutes an additional and unacceptable provocation.
